Calm and creature comforts in this 17th-century sandstone cottage.
Just beyond the arched entrance in the high sandstone walls of the Melmerby Hall Estate you’ll find Grade II listed Stag Cottage, tucked up against the Hall
Stag Cottage has been converted with craft and care from one of Melmerby Hall’s former working spaces into a bright and welcoming holiday retreat. Inside, you’ll find charming oak beams, a historic inglenook fireplace, and a spacious open plan reception and breakfasting kitchen. Outside, there are gated and sandstone walled private front and rear gardens with a fire pit and Weber charcoal BBQ for relaxed gatherings.
Stag Cottage is connected to Melmerby Hall via a secret lockable door leading to the Butler’s Pantry and both properties can be rented together as a glorious twelve-bedroom house to accommodate larger groups.
This charming three-bedroom retreat is a cozy escape from the demands of the outside world. Dating back to the 17th century, the cottage retains its period features, including a oak beams and a spacious open fireplace that dominates the living area. The ground floor including the Dacre ensuite double bedroom is step free throughout.
Stag Cottage’s flagstone oak and granite kitchen’s built with muddy boots and paws in mind for relaxed lunches. Make the most of the elegant dining room for candlelit suppers and games around the antique table. Get the wood-burning stove blazing, stretch out on leather sofas and oriental rugs. Curl up on a padded window seat to read, dream and nibble local delicacies from your generous wicker welcome hamper.
The historic grace and five-star comfort of Stag Cottage replenishes you, body and soul.
Enjoy a sunny morning coffee and convivial barbecues on your private terrace and gated rear garden. Head into Melmerby’s woodland grounds for a hearty walk down to Melmerby Beck through acres of ancient woodland, perfect for den and dam-building. Stroll into the village for delicious scones from The Old Village Bakery, or a pint of local ale from The Shepherds Inn and explore the treasure trove of toy workshop and stunning boutique clothes that are squirrelled away behind the village’s rose sandstone walls.
Ground floor
Gravelled parking area leading to an oak floored entrance hall opening to a large open plan breakfasting kitchen and sitting room with oak flooring and an open wood-burning fire with plenty of free logs and kindling provided! The spacious dining room opens directly to the lawned and hedged private front garden. The ground floor Dacre bedroom can either be arranged as a 5′ king size bed or twin beds depending on guest preference and has an ensuite shower room.
First floor
The spacious Master Bedroom has an oak carved 5′ bed and a large dressing room leading to a cathedral ceilinged ensuite bathroom with a cast iron bath and a separate shower. The Threlkeld Bedroom has twin beds which can be joined to form a 6-foot bed depending on guest preference and an ensuite bathroom.
With the Pennines at one elbow, the Lakes at the other, you’re spoiled for choice. Bike, hike, ride, fish and shoot. Scale a mountain or try wild swimming. There are numerous walks from your doorstep. Take the Ullswater steamboat for jaunts round Aira Force, or swan into one of Cumbria’s Michelin-starred restaurants. Make memories to cherish, picking sun-ripened raspberries or brushing snow from the branches of your hand-picked Christmas tree, felled to order on the Estates. If the limitless supply of natural wonders begin to pall, recharge your adrenalin with quad biking, e-bike cycling or clay pigeon shooting.
