Charlie took Christine here for their first date in Cumbria & it has really special memories for us. The National Trust Aira Force Waterfall is delightful rain or shine and all times of the year. You can even take a stroller up the first section or extend out up and over Gowbarrow Fell for a more challenging hike and fabulous views over Ullswater. We have set out three routes starting at the National Trust carpark at the base of the fells & finishing back there. We recommend going straight to the welcoming tea shop just off the carpark after your hike.
Addingham Church Bridleway paths – Turn left from Glassonby towards the center of the village, left again and on up the hill to the lane leading to Addingham Church on the right hand side, follow the lane till it turns into a public bridleway which opens into a “T” junction either way is a pleasant off road walk through the woods. Retrace your route to return.
Glassonby Airfield – Turn left from Glassonby towards the center of the village walk up to the playground then left again at each turning you reach will lead you in a large rectangle past the airfield on the left then along the road to Gamblesby before returning back to Glassonby along the country roads. This is probably a mile or so in length.
Up the fellside into the spruce woods – This route leads past the Shepherd’s Inn pub and on up the fellside offering great views up the Eden Valley and back over the village of Melmerby. There is a lovely stream which runs through these woods that kids love!
Rambling within the Melmerby Hall Gardens and wooded glen – Enter the woods through the wicket gate at the end of the archery lawn then follow the winding trail on through the wooded glade out at high level then back via the lower level to arrive back in the main gardens via the path hidden below the front beech hedge.
A ramble to Greystoke and through the castle grounds – Turn right out of Blencowe Hall following the single lane road to Greystoke. Once within the village, there is a permissive walking within the Greystoke Estate – please stick to the arrow marked footpaths which lead up onto the fellside. There is a second footpath in the village leading past the main church and into the fields beyond.
A pleasant 3 – 4 mile loop route is to turn left out of Blencowe Hall, take the next left up the hillside in the village, follow this to the top then take the first turn left to Johnby, then left again in the village of Johnby, down the hill into Greystoke, left at the Cycle Cafe and back again to Blencowe. These are all quiet roads – great for cycling, running or walking.
A hike up to High Dodd – one of the adjoining fells -Right out the front door of Hause Hall farm and on up the ridge line to High Dodd’s stone cairns describes this 3.5 mile route best – great view and the surprising discovery of an antique black cast iron garden bench at the top of one of the lower plateaus along the way. It’s a great out and back hike heading up one of the nearby fells offering views towards Pooley Bridge and beyond looping back around Wintercrag just under 4 miles.
The gentle loop around the base of Hallin Fell – This is a super early morning run/jog or a gentle late afternoon hike from Hause Hall Farm down to Sandwick and back around along the public footpath and well trodden Herdwick sheep trail.
